The Basics

R & L Elite Style 1/2" Positional X-Ray MarkersX-ray markers are a requirement for professional radiological technicians for the proper completion of x-ray diagnostics. Whether they are working in a chiropractic facility, a doctor's office, a dentist’s office, a hospital, or a veterinarian clinic, these tools are a crucial factor in achieving an accurate and reliable diagnosis. Radiological technicians are trained in the proper use of x-ray markers during the course of their schooling. They should be knowledgeable on how to use x-ray markers in their specific fields. X-ray markers are referred to by a number of different names, most commonly: The purpose of x-ray markers is to record information on x-rays. These tools are used for:
  • Recording the patient’s name
  • Recording the date and time that the x-ray was taken
  • Imprinting the radiographer’s initials
  • Distinguishing between the left and right side of the body
  • Indicating the position of the body at the time of the x-ray
Kemper Medical is dedicated to providing technicians in all relevant fields with high quality x-ray markers to ensure proper diagnosis, and therefore treatment, of their patients. These tools are an invaluable aspect of properly diagnosing a wide range of medical problems. Our x-ray markers are manufactured by leading medical supply companies, all of which have earned a reputation for superior products. Kemper Medical is proud to provide high quality products to technicians, surgeons, and doctors at prices that are affordable.

How and Why Technicians Should Use X-Ray Markers

R & L 1/2" Button X-Ray Film MarkersProper radiological diagnostics, like all diagnostics, depend on recording relevant information properly. This is why all radiological technicians should understand how to use x-ray markers, so that patients are not misdiagnosed and improperly treated. Rad techs need to know exactly how to position their markers within the main beam of the radiographs. Certain details need to be properly indicated as well, such as the left and right side of the body part that is being diagnosed via x-ray. It is this left/right distinction that is the main reason for the x-ray marker. Failing to distinguish one from the other can lead to fatal misdiagnosis when it comes to conditions like:
  • Dextrocardia: Those with this condition have their heart situated in the right side of their chest rather than the left.
  • Situs Inversus: Those with this condition have all of their bodily organs located in the opposite side of their body.
These are the most obvious conditions in which a proper left/right distinction is necessary, but there are other, more subtle conditions where the distinction is equally important. X-ray markers are required in virtually all medical facilities. It doesn’t matter if their use seems arbitrary, every x-ray requires a clearly visible mark indicating the left side of the body from the right in order to guarantee proper diagnosis and treatment.

X-Ray Markers Are Also a Legal Requirement

Failing to use an x-ray marker in the creation of an x-ray diagnostic will lead to the voiding of its later use as a legal document in the event that a medical facility is involved in a lawsuit. Radiation must pass through an x-ray marker before an x-ray can be officially regarded as a legal document, and it must do so in a way that leaves a clear, legible print on the x-ray, indicating all of the required information for a proper diagnosis. The initials of the radiological technician may need to be included on the x-ray as well. This is contingent on the medical facility itself. It may be a requirement that radiological technicians own their own signature x-ray markers that include their initials.

Various Forms of X-Ray Markers

  • Sun-Dial X-Ray Markers: This form of x-ray marker includes a rotating centerpiece used to record information around the marker’s face. This can also be used to record the amount of time that has passed between the patient’s injury, or time of patient admission, to the taking of the x-ray. The center dial can be used to record anywhere from a quarter of an hour to 48 hours. Radiological technicians can include a wide range of different information using these x-ray markers.
  • Skin Markers: These can be used to highlight certain areas of the skin for a more comprehensive diagnosis. These include scar tissue wire, lead wire markers, bb markers, and semi-translucent markers.
  • Mammography X-Ray Markers: These include a standardized set of abbreviations, all of which have been created by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The wide range of markers available in these sets allow for the labeling and identification of many different mammographic images via numerous imprints.
  • Positioning X-Ray Markers: Proper diagnosis and treatment sometimes requires an indication of the position of the patient when the x-ray was taken. Positioning x-ray markers are used for just that. They can also indicate whether the patient was supine or erect, or whether or not their body was weight bearing, at the time of the x-ray.
  • Informative X-Ray Markers: With these x-ray markers, radiological technicians are able to record information such as measurement standards, time elapsed, the date and time of the procedure, and the patient’s name.
  • Standard Left/Right X-Ray Markers: As adequately distinguishing the left from the right sides of the patient’s body is an invaluable aspect of proper diagnosis, for both medical and legal reasons, these markers fulfill an incredibly important role in most medical facilities. At the very least, medical facilities should have the standard left/right x-ray markers. They include red to indicate the right and blue to indicate the left, making left/right indication very easy.

Recent Developments In X-Ray Marker Technology

It may be time for you to update your x-ray markers, as great technological strides have been made in recent years. Some improvements you may not be aware of include:
  • Classic Elite Markers: These have been made specifically to meet the requirements of today’s imaging procedures.
  • Clip Markers: Attaching a marker to a cassette is incredibly easy with these markers.
  • Wafer Thin Markers: These accommodate new modern digital equipment rather nicely. They also involve an easy bucky clearance.
  • Markers With Copper Backing: These are great markers to use with x-rays involving high KV settings.
