Why Rad Tech X-ray Markers Are Medically Important
X-ray markers are an essential part of the x-ray process. If a radiological technicians has been properly trained as a radiological technician, they will have been trained on how to use these tools. For instance: they should know to position their marker within the main beam of radiographs.
The most important reason radiological professionals use rad tech x-ray markers is to distinguish the patient’s right from left. Without doing so, improper diagnosis of certain conditions can occur, including:
- Dextrocardia: This is a congenital condition in which the heart is situated on the right side of the body rather than the left.
- Situs Inversus: This is a condition in which the internal organs are all located in the opposite side in the body.
While misdiagnosing these problems can lead to some obvious medical failures, there are plenty of less obvious medical problems in which failing to distinguish the left/right side of the body can have disastrous effects. Rad tech x-ray markers are a requirement in virtually all medical facilities. A clear and distinct left/right indication must be marked on all x-rays, no matter how arbitrary it may seem in some circumstances. Why Rad Tech X-ray Markers Are Legally Important
The necessity of rad tech x-ray markers in the medical field goes beyond their mere medical utility. There are plenty of legal reasons as to why radiological technicians must use these in their x-ray diagnostics. On some occasions, x-rays are used as legal documents, such as in cases where a medical facility is being sued. For x-rays to be officially recognized as legal documents, radiation has to pass through the marker so that it is visible and readable on the x-ray image.
Legally speaking, an x-ray must properly distinguish the left vs. right side of the x-ray. Many medical facilities also require the rad tech’s initials on the x-ray image, which is why they require rad techs to have their own x-ray lead markers that include their initials.
Various Types of Rad Tech X-ray Lead Markers
- Standard Left/Right X-ray Markers: Properly indicating the left and right sides of the patient in x-rays is both medically and legally imperative. At the very least, a medical facility should have the standard x-ray marker, which comes in a set that includes color coded left and right markers. Traditionally, right markers are red and left markers are blue. This simple distinction makes identifying left and right very easy during x-ray procedures.
- Informative X-ray Markers: These can be used to provide more information beyond the mere left/right indication. This information can include the patient’s name, the procedure date, time, and time elapsed, as well as measurement standards.
- Positioning X-ray Markers: Specific positioning information may be required by a medical facility under certain circumstances. Information regarding positioning may include whether the client was supine or erect. Another example would be whether or not the image was taken while the patient’s body part was weight bearing. Some of the more standard left/right x-ray markers include a bubble compartment feature that holds three lead balls. The purpose of these balls is to indicate the position in which the x-ray was taken sans separate positioning x-ray markers.
- Sun-Dial X-ray Markers: These feature a rotating centerpiece for designating specific information around the face of the marker. This x-ray marker can be used in order to record how much time has passed since the patient sustained an injury or was admitted for care. The center dial on this particular x-ray lead marker can be turned in order to indicate time frames anywhere from a quarter of an hour to 48 hours. These devices give radiological technicians the ability to record a wide range of information on x-rays very easily.
- Skin Markers: These can be used to highlight certain areas of the skin to improve diagnostic imaging. These include semi-translucent markers, bb markers, lead wire markers, and scar tissue wire.
- Mammography X-ray Markers: These markers include a standardized set of abbreviations created by American College of Radiology (ACR). Proper mammography x-ray markers include degree markers, R/L/M designations, and base abbreviations on separate markers. Because of the range of the markers in these sets, radiological technicians can better label and identify various mammographic images via certain imprints.
